big love
Not sure if you ever saw the amazing HBO series "Big Love," but it was about a middle-class husband and his normal-in-every-way family -- normal except that he had three wives and about nine kids. Polygamy appeals to me, oh about ten times less than NOT AT ALL, but the part where the kids ran in and out of the three houses and everyone all traded off watching them? I liked that.

As luck would have it, that's kind of what our neighborhood is like. The houses surround a nice little city park, and most days all the kids are out there until the streetlights come on after dinner. They are all friends -- more like cousins, and to celebrate the end of summer we had a little party. Here are some pics of my Big Love family.

Lila Mae and her daddy (my awesome husband of almost 13 years!!):

May you all enjoy the blessing of friends who are like family!!

blog tourette's, or the story of ping
Thank you all so much for responding to my last post -- it made me so incredibly happy to hear from you! If I could see each of you in person I would present you with this bouquet of clover, picked from our unmowed front yard by Joaquin and Lila Mae. Surely our bees have kissed each tiny flower, and we might even be able to share some honey made from these flowers in the future. So, thank you.

This bouquet is also an apology to any of you who subscribe to this blog by Feedburner, which "pings" my blog every thirty minutes looking for new content, not unlike some kids I know who ping me every thirty minutes for juice/the crayon box/lost shoes, etc.

In its hungry search for new content, Feedburner grabs ANYTHING that has been tinkered with, including old pages that I update for whatever reason, and as a result my blog has been blurting random pages at you, unbidden -- I am sorry. Please feel free to tell it to go sit back down, that someone will be paying attention to it soon. Also, the juice is in the door of the fridge and shoes are in the basket by the front door.

Interesting Documentary on Education

I won't even waste your precious time apologizing for being completely off the grid since December, so I'll get straight to the point. There is a really interesting movie showing for ONE night only this coming Monday, and I really hope you will make an effort to go see it.

Not only am I a sucker for documentaries, but this one was done by someone who had never made a film before (so there's hope for me yet!), but by a mom who was concerned about her kids and started asking questions. I champion anyone who says, "Are we doing this right?" on a daily basis, since that seems to be the only thing I ask myself these days. Nothing has shaken my sense of confidence like being a parent, and I'm betting that any parents reading this will nod their heads.

So, rest assured that after Monday you will not have to hear me shill for this movie anymore. Jeri Rowe is writing a column about it that will appear in tomorrow's paper. I'll post a link to it on my Facebook page.

And if you miss it for whatever reason, you can always just host a screening via your church, your school or your plain old self.

"Race to Nowhere" -- check it out.

summer hiatus
My to-do list for this week: go to a matinee (either "Inception" or "Salt" or both), finish reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, catch up on episodes of "True Blood" and "This American Life," go to the pool with the kids, take a nap each afternoon, go for walks in the evenings, make huge batch of pesto, tomato sandwiches, blueberry pancakes and peach cobbler. When all of these are checked off my list, I'll back in the office on August 2nd. Enjoy your own summer hiatus!

xoxo

Lila Mae Turns Three
People often assume that I have books and boxes and hard drives filled with photos of my own children, but I can promise that if you read this blog you have seen pretty much the only ones I have ever taken of them! I definitely have a clear distinction between my life as a mom and my life as a documentarian of other people's families, and sometimes I enjoy just living my life and not having to be inside it and outside it at the same time.

But Sunday was Lila Mae's third birthday, and I needed to shoot with something better than my iPhone camera. I was incredibly humbled by our neighbors, who hosted a party for her in our across-the-street park. I had just come back from a beach wedding weekend (that post coming soon), so we had planned to do something for Lila next month when things quiet down a bit in our lives. Instead, she was treated to balloons, cupcakes, a bubble machine and presents -- a perfect birthday! Special thanks to Olga and Pat (Bad A** Baby Anya's parents), and all of our Highland Park friends for reminding us what community is all about.

If you are in a browsing mood, you can see what her birthday was like last year, and if you are just tuning in to this blog, here are some more entries about our family. Happy birthday, sweet Lila Mae!

Her big brother takes such good care of her! (As long as she is not messing with his Thomas the Tank Engine set or generally annoying him in some way...)
