engaged: katie + john
This delightful couple is tying the knot next year (coordinated by the fantastic { Tara Jordan }), and we had to schedule our photo session around the fact that Katie is about to move to Bordeaux, France for a research position. So exciting! We shot everything on the Biltmore Estate, and here is what they have to say about the wonderful journey they are on together:

Q. What were you each doing when you started to think, maybe he/she is "the one"?
Katie writes: I was never really one to daydream about weddings, and much into my 20s I was not sure I would ever get married. That's not to say I didn't love John with all my heart, just that for a long time I didn't think about our love in terms of, 'when is he going to pop the question?' It wasn't until Christmas 2008 when John had planned an elaborate scavenger hunt for my Christmas present that I started to think, "This might be an engagement ring!" and I realized how much I wanted to be married to this man. Alas, it was not an engagement ring, but a beautiful diamond necklace. Nonetheless, I had come to the realization that I was ready to be married and he was the one. Less than a year later he asked for my hand in marriage after a beautiful hike to our favorite spot. Now I often find myself daydreaming about our wedding and upcoming adventures!
John writes: I think it was during our road trip from North Carolina to Washington state. I had just quit my job in Raleigh and made the bold decision to move across the country with Katie after only 6 months of dating. With no job and no real plan, I knew it was a big move but I wanted to give us a chance. During our move I realized what a wonderful, adventurous, and fun girl she was and I knew I had made the right decision.

Q. Has a book or movie ever changed the course of your life? If so, which one and how?
Katie writes: I would say there are two books that have made a difference in my life. The first is my all-time favorite book, The Sound and the Fury. Faulkner has a way of writing which really allows the reader to understand the psyches of his characters, and I really found I enjoyed getting into the characters' heads. The second book was a gift from John's mom, The Time Traveler's Wife. I found myself reading this book late into the night, completely engulfed in the lives and loves of the two main characters, and crying my eyes out at how beautiful and fleeting love is. After closing the book each night I would roll over and watch John sleeping. It was while reading this book that I realized how lucky I was to have found him: the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, and to feel the heaviness that comes with a full heart.

a mountain wedding: melissa + walter
You'll remember this pair from their dreamy { sunset engagement session } of a few weeks ago, and their late June wedding was equally as sun-kissed and romantic. The festivities took place at { Lake Eden }, nestled in the foothills of Mt. Mitchell (yes, I have added a caveat my 60-mile travel clause so I can be available for fetes like this!). Many thanks once again to my second-shooter { Traci }, for her beautiful detail images and incredible artistry!

So many lovely, thoughtful details: the escort cards were clipped to a yellow Schwinn bicycle, the theme of which was echoed in the boxed chocolate wedding favors. There was old-fashioned cornhole to play, frisbees to be thrown, beachballs and bubbles for the kids, and a { kick-a** band } that has played the { LEAF festival }, on whose hallowed ground the whole shindig took place.

Melissa wore a { Vera Wang } gown with a birdcage veil, and her { bouquet } echoed mountain laurel and wildflowers. The huppah under which they said their vows was made from a vintage lace tablecloth that belonged to Melissa's grandmother, and was carried by their bridal party via tree branches found that morning in the woods. She and Walter chose to see each other beforehand, and then immediately after the ceremony they took a private, ten-minute walk through the woods. They wisely understood how easy it is to spend the whole wedding together without really getting a chance to stop and appreciate what has happened.

Being a photographer herself, Melissa was watching the fading afternoon light as much as I was -- she and Walter graciously sneaked off from the party for ten minutes so we could capture some shots on an overgrown hillside nearby. Sunset + wildflowers + lovers = yum. Add in a bonfire, a drum circle, and our super-cool { Limelight }, and you've got yourself a party.

I'm sure everyone present felt the way I did -- and the way Frankie did in The Member of the Wedding: "They are the we of me."

a midsummer wedding: andrea + michael
If it weren't for the occasional iPhone poking out of someone's sparkly clutch or dapper coat pocket, I could have sworn this wedding took place in 1953 in the Principality of Monaco. Andrea is one of those luminous beauties who is even more stunning because she pays no attention to how people see her -- she is even a tad bit goofy, which makes her very appealing. But boy, does the camera love her. As does her husband, as you can see here! They met on the tennis court while both were students at Elon, and they now live in DC. You might remember her { bridal portraits } from a few weeks back. In a word: YUM.

A few credits: the pink paper flowers on the vintage car were handmade by the bride and her mom and sister (a correction to my earlier assertion that they came from Etsy -- sorry!). The shot of them recessing down the aisle (one of my favorites) was taken from the choir loft by { Traci }, as was the cool scene-setter of the vintage car in front of the reception venue. As usual, she is capturing light in incredible ways. The last two shots in this post (bouquet toss and exit) are by { Marissa Kaplan }, a college student who has been interning with me each summer for the past four years. She is a rising senior at Boston College, and has an incredible eye -- keep your own eye out for her work in the coming years. Boston photog peeps: you'd be lucky to get her on board if you can.

Enjoy this lovely, elegant Southern soiree. Grace Kelly herself would have loved it.
