meadow wedding: meredith + catherine
Just a few highlights from last evening's absolutely lovely commitment ceremony at Peaceful River Farm, outside Chapel Hill. Meredith and Catherine were surrounded by their families and friends, all of whom played a role in making the day so perfect. The organic salad greens were picked from Meredith's parents' garden yesterday morning, the Brunswick stew was cooked all day by a dear family friend, the vegan soup was made by { Meredith's mom }, flowers were picked and arranged, music played, the cake baked, candles lit, wine poured -- all of it by their extended, loving community. As Catherine said in her thank-you toast, "we started to make a list of people to thank, but with 123 guests and 123 people to thank, it just got to be too long, so thank you ALL!"

raleigh wedding: britt + kenneth
There were so many favorite moments at this wedding, from the fist-pump that Kenneth gave on his way down the aisle holding hands with his new wife, to the rendition of { "Wagon Wheel" } at the reception by the amazing band, { Old Habits }. Family members came from all over, there were lots of tears of joy throughout the day, and in very Britt-and-Kenneth style, the reception was held at a truly off-the-beaten-path locale: the once-grand ballroom of the former { Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel } (a National Historic Landmark and Raleigh's oldest surviving hotel building) which now houses apartments for senior citizens. There were plenty of flummoxed expressions on the faces of the residents who kindly shared their lobby with a joyful band of celebrants going in and out. Oh! And the bouquet-toss flowers and garter were bundled with scratch-off lottery tickets. Awesome.

I have lots of favorite shots from this night, particularly from my co-shooter { Traci }, who captured Kenneth's expression as Britt came down the aisle, the gorgeous bridesmaids' bouquet shot, and one of my all-time favorite father-daughter dance shots. Enjoy!

backyard wedding: angie + selassie
There isn't much that can dampen the spirits of these two, not even a torrential downpour right in the middle of their vows, which forced a mad dash by all into their living room to conclude the ceremony. Their lovely backyard/living room wedding, downpour notwithstanding, was a community and family effort, with everyone pitching in to make the day and night perfect.

Many thanks as always to { Traci Arney }, whose work is featured below, as well as the wonderful { Marissa Kaplan }, who started as an intern five years ago and is now a bonafide shooter in DC.

A kind guest approached me moments before the 5:00pm ceremony and showed me the radar on his phone -- "just thought someone should know about this..." he said. By then it was go-time, so we all just had to hope the clouds would hold. (Fat chance, right? Look at that front!) Below is one of the readings, written by Nikki Giovanni.

farm wedding: susannah + paul
Shady oak tree: check. Rolling farmland hills: check. Organic food grown and raised on the land surrounding the reception: check. Totally in-love couple and joyful families: check. All are the perfect ingredients for Susannah and Paul's lovely June wedding at { Goat Lady Dairy }, one of my favorite places in all of central North Carolina. (I shot some { mini-sessions } there last spring.)

A summer thunderstorm blew through just before the ceremony began, turning the umbrellas meant for shade into welcome wedding favors. But the clouds soon parted and the ceremony under the huge oak tree near the main house was perfect. The bride and groom were each escorted down the aisle by both their parents, a lovely tradition, and the programs were handmade, as was their cake, a gift from their pastry-chef cousin. There was dancing under the stars to the awesome { Whiskey Rebellion }, delicious dinner served with Goat Lady Dairy cheese, and a surprise launching of { sky lanterns } that floated above the party. It was all lovely.

Enjoy!

I think everyone should have a photo of their loved one looking at them the way Paul is looking at Susannah here:

mountain wedding: amy + joe
A perfectly delightful summer wedding in the mountains of Western North Carolina, one of my favorite places on earth. Amy and Joe's dog, Sydney, was part of the celebration, and the bride's dressing room was a tiny cabin behind the reception barn. The original { Claxton Farm } barn burned down a few years ago, but in its place is a wonderfully rustic space with modern amenities. I loved the high ceilings, and the views from the open field are unrivaled. As always I was lucky enough to have { Traci Arney } as my co-shooter. Enjoy!

Dress: { Romona Keveza }
Ceremony and Reception Location: { Claxton Farm }, Asheville, NC
Cake: { Cakes by Jane }
Flowers: { Flora Event and Floral Design }

Her bouquet is wrapped in a piece of fabric that belonged to her grandmother, an avid sewer who was always working on a project.

Swizzle sticks were found on { Etsy }, and the peach preserves were made by Amy's mom using her grandmother's recipe.

Their dog, Sydney, enjoying the open field after a long car ride from their home in Atlanta.

One of my favorite "guest book" ideas ever: ink pads for the guests to turn their thumbprints into leaves on the couple's wedding-day tree. Also, a great idea for escort card display -- vintage window shutters.
