Courtney
Paul and I have lived in our cozy neighborhood for ten years now, and one of the great joys has been getting to know the many kind and interesting families here. We have gotten to know Courtney and her parents while hanging out at our little city park, squeezing adult conversation in between taking mulch out of our kids' mouths, pushing them in the swings, and spotting on them on the slides. Courtney, who is the same age as Joaquin, is an incredibly charming, precocious (and beautiful!) child. I remember her being able to point up into the sky and say, "Look! An airplane!" before she seemed old enough to focus her tiny baby eyes even a few feet away.
I was so flattered to have her mom ask me to take these photos, and we lucked out with last week's balmy weather for our shoot. I imagine that our kids will sit on these same benches in a few years grousing about their annoying parents. Until then, we can bask in their unbridled joy at being alive.

John Kimbrough
So this is really cool -- an uber-talented musician who also happens to be a friend of mine since we were teenagers co-wrote the Hugh Jackman opening Oscar medley that was such a hit on Sunday night. I took these portraits of { John Kimbrough } a few years ago in Brooklyn. Check out his website to learn more about him -- congrats, John!

Baby Hunter, Four Months Old
For you brides out there who are hungry for wedding images, fear not! Only three weeks until the starting gun goes off on 2009 wedding-a-palooza around here. In the meantime, what do you think all those past brides have been up to since walking down the aisle? (Besides working, going to school, volunteering, making art and all the other cool things they all do, that is. Making babies, of course!) Hence the proliferation of baby photo sessions this winter.
Here is Baby Hunter, whose {newborn shoot} was a pure delight. At the bottom of this post you can see the beautiful nursery collage that Taryn designed for the family.

Virginia
Nothing pleased me more than to photograph this incredible woman the same week I photographed a two-week old baby just beginning his time on Earth. Virginia, who is 88, served as a Navy Lieutenant in WWII, is a former small aircraft pilot, chiropractor, healer, adventurer and mother who spent much of her life in Montana. She moved to North Carolina last year when the effects of Alzheimer's curtailed her independence. Her daughter Leslie asked me to photograph her, and Leslie had a vision of her mother in the woods (a place she has always loved) with stark trees all around. The last shot is mother and daughter. Herewith a life well-lived and loved:

Baxter & Elle
Sweet Baxter is getting baptized this Sunday alongside our own Lila Mae and Joaquin (I'll be sure to get photos of them in their finery), so we did a session showing off his beautiful gown. His sister Elle -- who looks like a cherub and a 19th-century heroine all rolled into one -- got into the act near the end of our shoot. I love this family!
