Baby Ethan, Three Weeks Old
Baby Ethan is the son of David and Seoyoung, and nothing made me happier than to get Dave's call a few weeks ago letting me know that they'd had a baby. Their wedding in July 2007 was so memorable to me for its bittersweetness -- many of Seoyoung's friends and family were back in Seoul and she was missing them, even though she was so happy to be marrying David. Her brother made a toast that had the whole place in tears, even though it was given entirely in Korean! I am so honored to know them, and hope you enjoy seeing their beautiful family now -- and on their wedding day:

Lila Mae Turns Two
Our sweet girl is two. I think it's time for me to stop telling myself to take it easy since "I just had a baby." I'm certainly happy to come up with new reasons to be gentle with myself, but perhaps post-partum recovery need not be one of them. Um, yeah, that was 2 years ago.
We had a sweet get-together in our neighborhood park, and my sister Liz brought these beautiful flowers for Lila, which are now growing in our garden:
For anyone who has been reading this blog for a while, you know my parents are very special and creative, to say the least. My dad (a retired college president and amateur magician), loves to play with Photoshop and can make just about anything. Well, here is an incredible example of his handiwork: this is a puzzle made from a (very!) Photoshopped photo of Lila, walking hand-in-hand with a Raggedy Ann doll, and they are wearing matching dresses. My mom (an amazing seamstress and artist) made the dresses, which, along with Raggedy Ann doll itself -- and a companion puzzle for Joaquin (see below) -- arrived in a box for her birthday. Anyone who wonders what it was like around the dinner table growing up in our house need only witness this amazing feat of generosity, creativity and talent to see what we had to try and keep up with!
This series just sums them up perfectly -- Lila thinks Joaquin is the coolest person ever, and he in turn hugs her so hard that he knocks them both onto the ground.
Many thanks to all our dear friends and family for lifting us up (and helping us up when we fall) these past few years. We couldn't do it without you!

Baby Cora
Such a sweet family, who were kind enough to trust me with photos of their Cora, even though I'm new to photographing them (unlike many of my families, wherein the parents knew me from their wedding). They were all so smoochy and sweet together and Cora just beams with joy.
Cora's grandma dropped by for just a few minutes and I love this shot, which captures a little of the past (including Caroline's tattoo!), and the future.

Settin' the Woods on Fire
I have been a devotee of { Polecat Creek } since they played in the Borders on High Point Road ten years ago, and the three core musicians in the group (Laurelyn Dossett, Kari Sickenberger and Riley Baugus) are dear to my heart in so many ways. (*Here is an earlier shoot I got to do with Laurelyn.)
Therefore it is my great honor to have one of my portraits of Kari grace the cover of her first solo album, "Settle Down," which comes out today. Her voice is like Patsy Cline, her wry songwriting like Carson McCullers, and her arrangements would make Hank Williams proud. Be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this post to hear a sample of the title track. These first two images were shot last month in downtown Greensboro at the very cool { Elsewhere }, to which I highly encourage a visit. When Kari came to town for our photo shoot she very graciously brought her guitar and sang around our backyard campfire -- the beginning of what I hope to be a tradition of house concerts in our garden. Enjoy!

This next shot of Kari's daughter Rosa was taken in 2004 in Bayou Teche, Louisiana, where Polecat Creek was recording their album "Leaving Eden." Scroll down to see Rosa Grace today -- she can be seen in the last shot singing with her mama around the campfire.

Kelsey & James Get Married
A beautiful spring wedding at Fearrington on Easter weekend, made even more funny and sweet by the participation of Kelsey's two dogs, Bellini and Fenway. I was very lucky to be joined by one of our newest second-shooters, Traci Arney, who did such a great job and was so much fun to work with! Here is one of her many great images:
The fabulous Bellini:
Both Kelsey and James are Dartmouth alums, so the color of the wedding was a deep forest green, seen here on the handbells ready to be rung during the procession:
Great shot of James by Traci -- doesn't he look like Russell Crowe here??
One last look in the mirror before becoming a Mrs...
For her "something blue" Kelsey wore an evil eye pinned to the inside of her gown:
Bellini and Fenway wore beautiful flowers on their collars:
Kelsey had the idea of carrying "kissing balls" instead of a bouquet, since she would be walking down the aisle with her beloved pooches. Fearrington's floral artists outdid themselves on these:
The bellringers getting ready for showtime:
James' beautiful grandmother and mother just before the ceremony:
Chelsea, family friend and flower girl, did a beautiful job:
James' first glimpse of Kelsey:
There was a very vocal songbird making himself heard during part of the ceremony, which made it all feel even more rustic and romantic. I was looking up in the tree to try to find him when he took flight:
Another fun Traci shot:
Their first dance, which they spent months preparing for -- it was spectacular!
A tag-team effort on the bouquet toss -- I get to focus on Kelsey...
...and Traci captures the catch!
A lovely romantic day and evening -- congratulations, you two!!
