Love is a Garden: Cari & Phil
I first met Cari about five years ago when she took a photo workshop with me -- in addition to being a talented artist, she is incredibly loving and kind. When you see these photos, you might be tempted to think that they have just gotten engaged, but Cari and Phil have been married for nine years. They have the kind of marriage and friendship that we might all aspire to. I was very honored when she asked me to do some anniversary photos of them recently.

I remember Cari introducing me to Phil after one of our classes, and he was glowingly supportive of her and her dream of being a photographer. One of my favorite descriptions of a healthy relationship is that both parties trade roles back and forth again and again: sometimes one person is the garden and sometimes the gardener. When we get stuck being one or the other is when we stop growing.

Question for the day: In my relationships, am I the garden, the gardener, or both?

Engaged: Jill & Chris
Jill and Chris were married this past weekend (sneak peek coming soon), and in addition to having a gorgeous, down-to-earth wedding, they were an absolute blast on our engagement shoot. We went to the Lake Brandt Marina here in Greensboro -- one of the very first green spaces I visited when I first moved here ten years ago. It saved my sanity then, and it warms my heart now. Enjoy!

Fall Portrait Sessions: New Dates
It's not too late to book your 20-minute "mini-session" for fall family portraits. I announced the first set of dates to my newsletter subscribers, but due to the sessions' popularity, I have added three new timeslots: October 2, 3 and 10. November 11 (a school holiday) still has a few openings. Sessions are $75, take place in Greensboro, and you'll receive up to 10 images in an online gallery. You will then be able order prints and custom holiday cards.

To reserve your session, go to the calendar { HERE } and use the drop-down menu to select "Mini-Session." The available dates will show up in bold. I hope to see you in the next few weeks!

Below is the darling Elle, photographed at Fisher Park during a recent mini-session with her family:

Photobooth Wedding Part II: Bridget & Ben
It was so much fun to post the { Limelight } photos from this wedding, and now here is the sneak peek of the wedding itself. A few people were wondering if the Limelight booth was a replacement for our normal coverage of the reception, and the answer is a resounding NO! Since I always bring a second photographer, one of us is on the dancefloor and the other is womanning the booth. Also, we don't do any Limelight photos during toasts, cake-cutting, first dance, etc. Just FYI...

OK, onto the fun:

Everything was coordinated by the lovely { Katie Warner } and photographed at { Graylyn Estate }, including our bridal portrait session a few days before the wedding. If Bridget ever gets tired of being a Physician's Assistant, she certainly has a career as a model!

Gorgeous flowers by { Minglewood }, and her dress is a { Christos }, which she found at { Nitsa's } in Winston-Salem.

Lovely detail shots by Wendy!

I love the idea of a candy bar for guests as they leave:

Another dreamy shot by Wendy -- she finds ways to make the simplest details look magical:

This is always my favorite moment at any wedding -- the air just crackles with excitement and emotion as they see each other for the first time:

Bridget and her dad:

I mean, come on, are they not the most gorgeous couple??!!

I absolutely love this shot -- I was sitting next to Bridget in a golf cart after taking some portraits, and her friends suddenly spotted her as we drove by. The pure, honest love and admiration they have for their newlywed friend -- isn't it beautiful?

The newlyweds' siblings -- all of them gorgeous, too. Some gene pool, right?

This is completely random, but this praying mantis landed on me at one point, and there was something very magical about him. It was my "Dust of Snow" for the day. (Note: that is not my hand! Mr. Mantis landed on the bartender, who was kind enough to let me photograph them both.)

Pure cuteness, that's all (note their matching seersucker outfits!).

Making their entrance:

I love this hug, because this isn't just the hug of a husband and wife, but the hug of best friends. You can just feel how much they trust and rely on each other:

Is it just me, or does Bridget look like Julia Roberts?

If you haven't booked a band for your wedding yet, PLEASE call these guys. The awesome Chuck Folds and { Rubber Band }.

Yes, it was a Protestant wedding celebration -- and yes, chairs were lifted into the air -- cuz that's how they roll.

Yours sincerely, Joyce Tenneson
I don't know how many of you are familiar with the wonderful work of { Joyce Tenneson }, but insert your favorite whomever into the signature line of this letter and you'll appreciate how psyched I was to receive it:

Dear Abigail,
I am writing to recommend a wonderful intern to you. I recently had the pleasure of working with DeShelia Spann in my portrait workshop at the Maine Photographic Workshops. She is a fine photographer, but more importantly, a very pleasant and upbeat person to have around the studio. She has good management skills as well as great people and marketing skills. She is in the midst of a career change and would very much like the opportunity to intern at your studio. She admires your work, and I think this could be a good fit for all! Please don't hesitate to call me if you have any further questions.
Yours sincerely,
Joyce Tenneson

Whoa. You can bet that I couldn't wait to meet this mysterious friend-of-Joyce, and when I did, DeShelia immediately eclipsed even Ms. Tenneson's long shadow with her wonderful personality and energy. That was two years ago, and DeShelia has become a good friend and colleague, and has gone on to build her own { photography business }. I was so honored when she asked me to photograph her new headshot a few weeks ago. Because she emits such an inner glow, I decided to backlight her, and I love how it turned out. Thank you, DeShelia, and thank you Joyce Tenneson!
